Function

Job description

As a Satellite Ground Segment Engineer you are the overall responsible for the Ground Segment (also referred to as Flight Operations Segment or Satellite Control Segment) of the different satellite mission we are working on. This includes the requirements, follow up with the design, development, validation, and deployment. You will also support the launch and commissioning activities. For some of our missions, you could be involved in the operations phase itself.

The ground segment is typically procured by a subcontractor, so your role will involve subcontractor management and follow-up of their activities, from a technical and programmatic point of view. The ground segment is part of reviews by the satellite customer (ESA or commercial). You will be part of these reviews, checking subcontractor documents, writing system level documents, and answering to customers feedback.

The ground segment is typically using linux-based applications, you will be installing, validating and using these applications on a daily basis, supporting other users with training and issue analysis and resolution.

The ground segment has a long heritage for our ongoing and currently in-development satellite missions. We aim for maximum reuse, mainly focusing on the difference in requirements between the different missions. The ground segment is used for satellite AIT (Assembly, Integration and Test) and fully reused in operations, which poses some specific requirements to the ground segment.

You will be responsible for the typical functions in a ground segment, including mission specific items like mission planning, Flight Dynamics System (FDS) and the interface between the ground segment and the payload/customer control segments. For this last part, you will take part in interface discussions to define the interfaces and document them in Interface Control Documents (ICDs).

You will take care of the implementation of security of the ground-to-space links (authentication and encryption). You take part in the procurement of baseband units (S-band and X-band) and ground antenna’s across the world, supporting our satellites in-orbit.

We expect that you oversee the ground segment of multiple missions to ensure commonality and reuse, but also to allow the implementation of a medium and long term evolution of the ground segment, compatible with the needs of the future satellite projects.

You will interact a lot with the team responsible for the flight segment and the customer.

Profile

  • Master degree in engineering or software architecture.
  • Experience in ground segment systems and/or satellite operations would be beneficial. Ideally you have +3 years of experience in a similar job. Terms like SCOS, EGS-CC, MPS, FDS, FOP are known to you.
  • Experience in satellite flight segment architecture is an obvious asset, but not absolutely required.
  • Fluency in English (speaking and writing) is an absolute must.
  • A good linux background is highly desirable.
  • Highly motivated to learn about the specific operational details of our satellite missions. You’re not afraid to dive into complex systems and analyze them critically. You are passionate about space systems.
  • Proactive, creative, enthusiastic and result-oriented team player with a broad view.
  • Good communication skills, able to discuss directly with customers and finding good technical solutions, while maintaining control over schedule and budget constraints.
